Hi, guys!\u00a0 What\u2019s up!\u00a0 I\u2019m Mitsuki and I go to Central Hawks Bay College.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My classmates, including me, have been working on a research project in New Zealand.\u00a0 We are supposed to decide our own individual theme and do some research.\u00a0 Then we are going to make a presentation after we go back to Japan.\u00a0 Today I\u2019m going to tell you a part of my research project, which is about New Zealand English.<\/p>\n

One of the subtopics of my research project is about words.\u00a0 When I was learning English in Japan, many of my teachers spoke to us in American English.\u00a0 However, people in New Zealand speak New Zealand English and there are many unique words used here.\u00a0 Below is the list of the words that I often hear in New Zealand.\u00a0 I wonder how many words you understand.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u30fbKiwi(s) \u2013 New Zealander(s), Kiwi bird(s) or Kiwi fruit(s)<\/p>\n

\u3000\u30fbtogs \u2013 swim wear<\/p>\n

\u3000\u30fbChur \u2013 Thank you<\/p>\n

\u3000\u30fbjandals \u2013 sandals<\/p>\n

\u3000\u30fbtea \u2013 dinner<\/p>\n

\u3000\u30fbgum boots \u2013 rubber boots<\/p>\n

Not only do I often hear these words, but also I do use them\u00a0when I talk with kiwis.\u00a0 When I heard\u00a0\u201cjandals\u201d for the first time, I was able to guess that the word meant \u201csandals.\u201d\u00a0 However, I wondered why they used\u00a0\u201cjandals\u201d\u00a0instead of \u201csandals.\u201d\u00a0 Now I think it is like how I use Fukui dialect when I talk to my family and friends.\u00a0 For instance, people in Fukui say \u201ckazenetsu\u201d instead of saying \u201ckounaien\u201d for cold sores.\u00a0 \u201cJandals\u201d is the way Kiwis refer to sandals in New Zealand.\u00a0 Some of the\u00a0words above, such as \u201cChur\u201d and\u00a0\u201ctea,\u201d are also used in the\u00a0U.K.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Next, I\u2019m going to teach you some other Kiwi words which I learned by doing my research.<\/p>\n

There are lots of shortened words such as Barbie in New Zealand.\u00a0 \u201cBickie\u201d is another example and it means \u201cbiscuit.\u201d\u00a0 Some of the words listed above are also used in Britain and Australia as well.\u00a0\u00a0 However, \u201cmunted\u201d\u00a0is used only in New\u00a0Zealand, so\u00a0only New Zealanders\u00a0or people who have learned New Zealand English can\u00a0understand this word.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When I started living here, I couldn\u2019t understand what other people were talking about at all.\u00a0 However,\u00a0now\u00a0I enjoy talking with my friends.\u00a0 I am so\u00a0stocked<\/strong>\u00a0to go to Central Hawke\u2019s Bay College with my lovely friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I hope you\u2019ve learned something new in my essay.\u00a0 When I make a speech of my research project, I\u2019m going to talk more about New Zealand English, such as the history of New Zealand English and its accent.\u00a0<\/p>\n
