Hello. How have you been? I am Shizuki, and I am a Year 12 student at Pompallier Catholic College in Whangarei. More than a quarter of my life in New Zealand has finished, and Term 2 has started. I am going to tell you about my host sister from Brazil, who stayed with me as an exchange student, and some things that happened in Term 1 and what learned from these experiences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, I will talk about my host sister. She made the atmosphere of the house brighter. She loved shopping, and by going with her, I also came to like it. To be honest, spending time together was not always easy. I felt uncomfortable with her many times. The levels of our English were not the same. I sometimes couldn\u2019t tell her what I wanted to say or couldn\u2019t understand what she wanted to say. However, I have some things which I\u2019ve learned from her. For example, it\u2019s important to talk a lot to improve my English speaking skills. I often felt shy, but she did not at all. She seemed to like talking. She always shared many things with my host family, such as the differences between Brazil and New Zealand. About one month and a half after I met her, I felt a sudden improvement in her English. More words and sentences came from her mouth, and the speed at which she spoke English also increased. I felt a little pressured because I still found it hard to speak and my words often got stuck. I thought I had to always practice speaking like her. Thanks to my host sister from Brazil, I had many chances to talk with her in English.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, I want to talk about something I was glad about and something I regret. In Term 1, besides the two of us from Jin-ai, there were four other Japanese students, who left after that term. Some of them had their own group of friends. I often talked with them in Japanese, which might not have been the best idea. However,<\/span> it’s also true that I was able to make some friends thanks to them. One time, some of the local friends of the Japanese students talked to me and said that I could eat lunch with them. After that, I sometimes ate lunch with them. Also, there were other students who talked to me. I was glad because it made me think that they are interested in international students even just a little bit. I should have asked if I could eat lunch with them, but the time has already passed. I regret not doing that.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last, I will talk about two things that made me happy. One of them happened on Athletics Day. On that day, I participated in many events, such as long jump, discus and javelin. After my events, two students said to me, \u2018good job.\u2019 I had only talked a little with one of them, and I had never talked with the other. I was very happy that they spoke to me.\u202fThe other happy moment is about my music club. I go to the music club every Friday, and a girl talked to me there. Also, I had a concert recently. At the concert, the girl talked to me again, and I was also able to talk to other students too. Honestly, I was not sure if I should talk to them before I did it, but I\u2019m glad I did. I think from the bottom of my heart that it was a good decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am not very good at talking to people, but I want to build confidence by trying again and again. As I wrote above, many students have given me a hand, and talked to me very kindly, so I will do my best from now on by taking a little advantage of their kindness. I’m really grateful for the chance to have such wonderful experiences and to reflect on many things during my time here in New Zealand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
