Hello, everyone. I’m Yaya, a year 11 student at Bream Bay College.<\/span> In a good way, I didn’t feel like I was in NZ when I arrived here, and I felt comfortable. I don’t know why but I would say this environment suits me. It is autumn in NZ now and it’s a little cold. Term 1 finished and term 2 has started. I would like to share some of the problems that I\u2019ve overcome and some of the good memories I\u2019ve made.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, I’m going to talk about my host family. My host family is just my host mom. I spend a lot of time with her. For example, we go to the gym, go shopping, visit the farm and see her grandchildren.<\/span> When I go to see her grandchildren, I often ride horses or play with her granddaughter and her grandson. However, the first month I spent with my host mom was quite difficult, because she sometimes made jokes and repeatedly expressed her opinion against mine. And then, I took her jokes and her opinions seriously every time. I couldn’t tell her my own opinion well and I felt hurt. It happened again and again. One day, suddenly, my host mom said to me “Don\u2019t take what I say seriously.” That\u2019s when I realized that I didn\u2019t have to take everything seriously. She was just joking or sharing her thoughts.<\/span> From that day on, I started to embrace everything with a smile. So, now, I feel very happy, and I love to talk with her. I think we\u2019ve become closer since that day. Now I understand her character better. I\u2019ve learned that it is important to accept other people\u2019s personalities and respect them and that it takes time to get to know each other and to get used to other people\u2019s personalities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, I’ll talk about my lovely friends. Until I met them, l had tried to talk to people in many different groups because some groups didn’t like to spend time with me. However, I have good friends now. There are six people in my group. I\u2019m going to talk about one of them, Kate. We met in the hospitality class. When we were playing games in which we had to ask someone a question in this class, she offered me some help. I was very happy that she talked to me. After school, I asked her if I could have lunch with her. She said, “That’s a good idea.” Unfortunately, I have only one class I share with her, so one of the problems was that I couldn’t find her easily at lunch time because most students often change the place where they spend the lunch time.<\/span> Another problem was that I was very scared to talk to her friends in her group. One day, Kate kindly said to me, “I saw you today. Why didn\u2019t you come?” I answered, “I was scared.” She said, “Yaya, I’m sorry but don’t be scared to come to us.” Those words really hit me. From that day on, even though I was scared, I tried my best to find them and join their group.\u00a0 Now, they are my good friends.\u00a0 When I stay with them, Kate always cares for me. I love her and her kindness. Even now, when I have worries, I often consult her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to enjoy my life here. At the same time, I want to respect myself so I can stay confident when facing tough problems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, I\u2019d like to leave a message for my family. I\u2019ve been trying many new things and experiences since I came here. Thanks to your support, I\u2019ve been able to enjoy life here and learn so much from the wonderful people I\u2019ve met.\u00a0 I may still seem a bit reserved, but I\u2019m growing in how I express my emotions.
