Kia Ora. This may be a sudden question, but what do you think about staying in another country, living away from your mother country? I guess most people would say in unison, \u201cAbsolutely my English skills will improve.\u201d I can certainly state that. However, in my opinion, it is not the only reason for staying abroad. I\u2019ve noticed even more important things than that. I would like to tell you how I felt and what I noticed through my experience of living away from my mother country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First of all, I would like to tell you about my lovely friends. Thanks to my bravery and quick thinking, I was able to make some amazing friends. To be honest, not everything went smoothly at first. I somehow joined a group, but I was just sitting there, and I got confused about whether they were saying bad things about me. I felt so uncomfortable spending time with them, so I ate my lunch in a place where no one was around. I would say the lunch that day became the most unforgettable and saltiest lunch of my life. That night, I felt terrified thinking about the next day. When my host mother noticed that I couldn\u2019t sleep until midnight, she came into my room, gave me a hug, listened to me seriously and said, \u201cYou are not wrong. It\u2019s a completely normal issue for people staying abroad. As time goes by, your issue is going to get better.\u201d I was sincerely saved by her words. I can\u2019t\u202fput into words how relieved I felt. After that, she poured me a cup of cocoa and stayed with me until I calmed down. Without her, I wouldn\u2019t have friends even now. I\u2019m really grateful to her for her support. On Valentine\u2019s Day, I gave chocolate to those I wanted to get closer to. I felt a bit hesitant to give it to them because I wasn\u2019t very brave at that time. When I gave it to them, they gave me a hug and said to me,\u201d We are obviously friends!!\u201d with smiles. I can still clearly see in my mind how their facial expressions were and how I felt. I guess Valentine\u2019s Day gave me a push, and it obviously became a memorable day in my New Zealand life.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, I would like to tell you about what I\u2019ve thought during my life in New Zealand. I’m pretty sure that my mindset toward things around me has changed. You know, it is said that staying abroad changes your mindset in a good way. And now, I truly agree with this opinion. Kiwis live their lives as they want, and they don’t mind what people think about them. Unlike in Japan, students in New Zealand can freely take the subjects they want at school. Moreover, if they feel bored in a class, they can change to another one. Can you imagine that in Japan? Nah, that’s unthinkable in Japan, isn\u2019t it? I think this style has developed their sense of independence. I\u2019m surprised that every Kiwi looks grown-up in a good way compared to me. So, when I ask their age, I\u2019m shocked if they\u2019re younger than me. In addition, many Kiwis are more confident in themselves compared to me. Before I got here, I had no confidence to express myself, and I always cared about what people thought of me. But Kiwis live their lives as they want, and I see that all of them are fulfilled in their lives. I really like their way of living, and I always get good stimulation from them. Also, before I came here, I felt hesitant to express my thoughts, which were different from other people\u2019s mindsets. But Kiwis don\u2019t hesitate to state their opinion \u2014 rather, they want to assert it. I sometimes feel overwhelmed by their strong self-assertion. I\u2019ve learned that expressing myself is important to let people know what I\u2019m thinking.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lastly, let me leave a message for the people who have been supporting me. I have faced many problems so far, and I almost forgot the reason why I decided to study abroad. I realized how hard it is to overcome the language barrier, and I deeply feel my lack of experience. If I hadn\u2019t come here, I guess I wouldn\u2019t have noticed how narrow my perspective was. In New Zealand, people are full of personality<\/span>,<\/span> and they live their lives the way they want. My mindset has completely changed through interacting with them. I\u2019d like to do whatever I want, and I don\u2019t want to hesitate to make mistakes. I\u2019ve realized that it\u2019s O.K. to be different from others, because there are so many unique individuals in New Zealand. I thank everyone for giving me the chance to realize that. If I had stayed in Japan, I absolutely wouldn\u2019t have noticed it. I\u2019d like to tell everyone that the world is bigger than you think. Please don\u2019t trap yourself in your own way of thinking. After all, I like English. I swear that I will study hard and won\u2019t miss a single precious opportunity in New Zealand.
