\u201cGood things and bad things always come to an end.\u201d How do you interpret this? Even when we have a hard time, someday it will be gone. Even when we have a fun time, someday we will have to leave it behind. During my life in New Zealand, I have always kept this phrase in my heart. But actually, my interpretation of this phrase has changed between when I first came here and now.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At first, when I had problems, I kept telling myself that \u201cEven though I want to stay longer in New Zealand, I will leave here in November regardless, so I don\u2019t have to dwell on them.\u201d I depended on time to solve my problems and thought, \u201cEverything will finish anyway.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As time went by, my opinion changed. I started thinking that the time I can spend here is limited. Wonderful and fun times with my host family, friends and other people in New Zealand eventually will come to an end in November. That is why I have to find my own way to get over my problems, solve them as soon as possible, and try not to waste my limited time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even after I get over one problem, another problem comes. Right now, the biggest problem I face is that I have to leave my lovely friends, host family, and New Zealand soon. Through my experience of studying abroad, I\u2019ve learned the importance of time, family, friends, and people around me. If I had kept interpreting this phrase negatively, as I did at the beginning, my study abroad experience, my attitude toward challenges, and my time in New Zealand wouldn’t\u2019 have been as meaningful. I am glad that I realized this and was able to change my interpretation from negative to positive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only did I change my way of thinking, but I also came to understand how different New Zealand is from Japan and learned how to adapt to those differences. The environment, culture, people, and personalities are very different between New Zealand and Japan. I always have to think about what my friends and host family are thinking about. I always care about their feelings and think more carefully than when I was in Japan because I don\u2019t know how to make them feel better here in New Zealand. It\u2019s sometimes hard to stay on the same page with people in New Zealand. That\u2019s why I had problems more often than when I was in Japan and struggled with them. But it\u2019s only natural.\u00a0 I shouldn\u2019t have run away from all the problems that came to me. I should have expressed myself more actively and faced the problems in front of me.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe important thing when spending time abroad is not viewing things only through my own values but trying to see them from the values of others.\u201d This is the sentence I\u2019ve cherished since I got advice from one of my teachers, and it has made my life in New Zealand brighter. Sympathizing with others is the most important thing because the basis of values is way different between New Zealand and Japan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When I wrote the first essay for this homepage, it was just two months after I started my study abroad life. But now, I have less than two months left before going back to Japan. I\u2019ve faced a lot of problems so far, but at the same time, I\u2019ve made a lot of great memories with many people.\u00a0 I want to say a big thank you to people who supported me, such as my host family, my friends, teachers, the dean, and everyone who interacted with me in some way. In addition, I\u2019m very grateful to my family, teachers and agents for supporting my study abroad.
