Kia ora! I\u2019m Shizuki, and I go to Pompallier Catholic College. It\u2019s been five months since I wrote the first \u201cMessage from New Zealand.\u201d It\u2019s getting so warm here since spring starts in September in New Zealand! I\u2019m already starting to feel hot in this weather, but it must be even hotter in Japan, even though it\u2019s October, which should be autumn. I\u2019m a little worried about the heat of summer after I go back to Japan. Unlike the strangeness of Japan\u2019s seasons, I feel like New Zealand\u2019s are proper. In September, spring came on time, and it was freezing until August ended.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, the last term break for me has finished, and Term 4 has already started. Term 1 and Term 3 should have been the same length, 10 weeks, but I felt as if Term 3 went by more quickly than Term 1, which means I enjoyed Term 3 more! In this second \u201cMessage from New Zealand,\u201d I\u2019m going to talk about some changes in my life in New Zealand over the past five months since I wrote the first message in May.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, I\u2019m going to talk about my friends. I think this is my biggest change because I had few friends in Term 1. I wasn\u2019t in a group of friends. However, now I have many friends! I made friends outside of school as well. I started going to a badminton club in Term 2, and there were some very cheerful girls from a different school who talked to me on the first day. We play badminton together every time. Also, at school, I\u2019ve been in a group of friends since Term 2. The international dean at my school helped me make friends and introduced me to a group. In the group, there was one girl who had already been my friend since Term 1. She welcomed me warmly, so I didn\u2019t feel very uncomfortable being in the group, but with the others, it was hard to tell if they were happy about me being there because the atmosphere made me feel like I wasn\u2019t part of it. For that reason, I talked to another group whose members were friends with the group my international dean had introduced me to, and I had eaten lunch with them before. Actually, the new group is the one I wrote about in the first message, in which I said I should have asked them if I could eat lunch with them. Finally, I did ask them, and I\u2019ve been spending time with them since then. They\u2019re really nice. One day, they asked me what I would like to do in New Zealand, and I answered that I wanted to try Kiwi food. Since then, they have been telling me about various kinds of Kiwi food they recommend. Consequently, I\u2019ve been able to eat Kiwi food that I can only eat in New Zealand as much as possible. I feel that I\u2019m the one who knows the most kinds of Kiwi food among all Japanese people living in New Zealand. I really appreciate their help with everything. In addition, because I have them as my friends, although other students from Japan came to my school in Term 3, I didn\u2019t spend much time with them, which let them make their own friends. That must have been great for every Japanese student, including me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, let me talk a little about how I think when I talk to my friends at school or other people. I don\u2019t think I\u2019m as shy as I was, but even now, I still feel nervous when talking to them because of my English. It\u2019s obvious, but just being in New Zealand, surrounded by native English speakers, doesn\u2019t help improve my English skills. I used to think that the experience of studying abroad would help me get good English skills because I saw my seniors in the Study Abroad Course speak English naturally when I was in Japan. Even now, I still occasionally hesitate to talk to others, putting the excuse on my way of thinking or my lack of English skills. However, like everyone makes an effort to achieve their goals, you won\u2019t get anything if you don\u2019t take any action. Therefore, when I feel like running away from a situation because it\u2019s too scary to talk to someone, I try to say to myself, \u201cEveryone must have done their best where I couldn\u2019t see, so that they could improve their English. Then, is that okay for you now?\u201d What I wrote here might be something you already know, but I think it\u2019s difficult to think on the spot that \u201ca little courage might change something,\u201d because you\u2019re filled with the feeling that you don\u2019t want to do it. I know many people in New Zealand are very kind. So, as I was told by a teacher when I was in Japan, what I need now is \u201cjust a little bit of courage.\u201d Also, I believe that it could be very helpful both for improving my English in New Zealand and for my life after I go back to Japan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, I\u2019d like to talk about the best memory I\u2019ve ever had, which is the Waiata and Haka Competition. It was a competition to celebrate M\u0101ori culture, and waiata, which means a M\u0101ori song, and the college haka were performed by houses, which are like teams, on the last day of Term 3. We prepared for the competition throughout the year, separated into each house. In the competition, my house got the worst result, but I really enjoyed both watching other houses\u2019 performances while talking with my friend and performing as a performer. In the performance, I was supposed to be at the edge of the front row, but in the actual one, I was in the front row and very close to the center. That was a little embarrassing but made the event unforgettable for me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be honest, I didn\u2019t like haka very much before I came to New Zealand, but now I do like it! Aren\u2019t you inspired by the coolness of haka performed with people\u2019s best efforts, and by a culture completely different from Japanese? I can\u2019t express how cool it is in words, but you all definitely should watch a live haka!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lastly, I have one month left to spend in New Zealand. I\u2019m so glad that I\u2019ve met people who I want to see again somewhere in the future. I really appreciate such encounters and chances to meet nice, kind, and new people. I\u2019ll sincerely treasure these incredible experiences I\u2019ve had this year, and I would like to enjoy the remaining time!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope that you\u2019ve found some of my growth since the start of Term 2, and that my essay will be useful for someone, even a little.
