Hi! I\u2019m Machika. It\u2019s been a while since I posted the first essay. How are you all going? I hope you are all having an enjoyable time. I am writing this essay in the middle of summer, which means the day to go back to Japan is approaching day by day, and the days I can spend in New Zealand are getting fewer. I can\u2019t believe the day is finally coming. It\u2019s still clear in my mind how I felt on my first day in New Zealand. All the food I saw was unfamiliar, and the scenery from the window was 180 degrees different from Japan. I feel as if I had landed here yesterday. I would say that my time in New Zealand made me realize how quickly time passes. My study abroad here was like going back to my childhood. I mean, everything that happened to me was quite new. I\u2019m sure I had the most worthwhile time of my entire life here.<\/span>\u00a0

\nAs you already know, starting a life in a foreign country, which is an unfamiliar place, is not easy, never ever. And living abroad with new people is \u201cto perceive differences.\u201d This is the answer that I found. I think the way to perceive things totally depends on people, but the most important thing I want to tell you is \u201cyour experience depends on how you perceive differences.\u201d This is one of the things I\u2019ve learned through spending time here. When I came here, it was definitely tough for me to get used to life in New Zealand, and the way I was used to doing things in Japan didn\u2019t help me at all. I was surprised by how large the gap was in the initial few months. For example, it is not a big deal, but my host mother never rinses the dishes that still have soap on them. Can you imagine using dishes that still have soap on them? When I couldn\u2019t understand why she did it that way, I just did what I wanted regardless of her way. One day, she asked me with a bit of grumpiness why I was doing it in my own way. Then I realized that there must be some reasons behind people\u2019s actions, and that made me realize I should try to understand them instead of judging whether it is good or bad when living with my\u00a0 host family. I am now in New Zealand, not in Japan. New Zealand is known as a multicultural country, which means there are a lot of people who have different mindsets and cultures. What I want to say is that you don\u2019t have to hesitate to reveal yourself even if you have a different mindset from them. The important thing is how you deal with the differences. And I have learned to think, \u201cOh, there\u2019s such a way of thinking!\u201d in an optimistic way. It\u2019s way better to know other people\u2019s mindsets. By knowing and enjoying different ways of thinking, I\u2019m sure that your mindset will grow, and it will broaden your mind the same as I experienced. This kind of attitude perfectly reflects my way of thinking which I\u2019ve always had while in New Zealand. Living abroad with new people is never easy, and occasionally, you will face differences in thinking between each other.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kiwi people are more curious about Japanese culture than I thought. They often ask me, \u201cHow do you say blah blah in Japanese?\u201d and I always feel pleasantly unfamiliar, because I\u2019ve never had such experiences of being asked those kinds of questions in Japan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of my besties in New Zealand is half Tongan, and I have been to her house countless times. Every time I go there, they teach me Tongan words, and her mother always lets me experience a lot of Tongan culture. Learning about a different culture is really fun for me and makes me feel like I\u2019m exploring the world. Thanks to her, I\u2019ve come to be able to say some Tongan words! lol\u00a0 I am a lucky person who could learn not only English but also Tongan. Enjoying differences makes my life more worthwhile. This is the idea I\u2019ve discovered through interacting with many people here in New Zealand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My decision to study abroad, which I made when I was in junior high school, was not wrong at all. I wish I could talk to myself at that time, when I was about to collapse from a lot of anxiety. My experience in New Zealand made me realize how glad I am that I had my first overseas experience here. I\u2019m sure my study-abroad life has shaped my identity, and I\u2019ve learned a lot of valuable things\u2014not limited to improving my English skills. I\u2019m also blessed that I was able to study abroad while being a high school student, and the time I spent here is an unforgettable memory in my life. I met people who I wish I could bring back to Japan. My host sisters always say to me, \u201cWhen can we see you again after you go back to Japan?\u201d and I always say to them, \u201cYou can visit Japan and see me when you\u2019re my age.\u201d Nobody knows what will happen in the future, but I\u2019m sure that my time in New Zealand has made me realize that there are people I truly want to see again someday. New Zealand is the country I want to come back to. I swear I will return to New Zealand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
