T\u0113n\u0101 koutou katoa! I\u2019m Himari. As time goes on, my study abroad here is coming to its final stage. Time is fascinating and mysterious because it drags when we struggle, yet flies when we feel joyful. It is ironic that it flies only in those happy moments. Let me share some of the precious lessons I\u2019ve learned here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I came abroad, I used to think that the whole point of studying abroad was only to learn English. However, the challenges I faced here weren\u2019t just about English. If I tried to describe all of them, I couldn\u2019t count them. Here\u2019s one example from my experience. My host father asked me, \u201cAre you free on the weekend?\u201d during dinner or \u201cIs this enough soy sauce for the meal?\u201d while I was cooking dinner. For these questions, I always replied, \u201cI think so.\u201d One day, he said to me, \u201cHow come you always seem so unsure of yourself?\u201d Huh? I had no idea why he said that. I wasn\u2019t actually lacking confidence, and I thought I was answering properly. In Japan, we often use \u201cI think\u201d as a polite way of saying \u201cyes,\u201d but in New Zealand, it can give the impression that you lack confidence. That\u2019s the way things are. What I thought was normal in Japan turned out to be completely different here. I\u2019ve realized that everyone has their own sense of what\u2019s normal, which means there is no such thing as normal. Therefore, being clear about yes or no is one way of showing consideration for each other.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 Even at school, there are a lot of differences. The biggest thing I\u2019ve noticed is that students have various nationalities. In the classroom, there are not only Kiwis but also M\u0101ori, Filipino, Brazilian, British, and Cambodian students, and so on. Studying at such a multicultural school, I\u2019ve realized that taking the same class with students who have different languages and cultures isn\u2019t special.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I really appreciate my friends who found me among so many students. The time I spent with them helped me grow, and I will never forget them doing the haka for me, giving me hugs, spending lots of time talking together, and so on. I am truly sad that I must leave the friends who became the biggest part of my life in NZ for the last ten months, which somehow felt both short and long. They say \u201csee you again,\u201d not \u201cgoodbye.\u201d Saying goodbye feels empty. I feel less sad when I hear \u201csee you again.\u201d That loneliness is eased by the words we shared and the moment we promised to see each other again.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything\u2019s going to be alright\u201d was my key phrase during my time studying abroad. It means that instead of wasting time crying, I should think about what I can do next. In reality, though, I cried every time something happened. I needed that time to cry, too. Even so, I\u2019ve become better at solving problems by seeking help from others while still respecting my own ideas. I think I\u2019ve found the real me. It was me who started crying, but it was also me who decided to stop. As I mentioned, I faced many challenges and had more failures than successes. It may sound uncool, but this is my study-abroad experience. That is fine. Those failures helped me gain broader perspectives and connect with new communities. The tears I shed transformed from tears of weakness into tears of strength.<\/span>\u00a0
