Kia Ora! I’m Mizuki, and I go to Central Hawke’s Bay College as a Year 12 student. How are you doing? I’m glad to be able to write this essay because I read many of these before I started studying abroad. Through studying abroad, I\u2019ve learned a lot of things, so let me share what I have learned and my wonderful memories.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, I\u2019ll talk about my host family. I live with my host mother and two lovely cats. She is good at cooking, and it’s always fun to cook with her. I’m glad I can learn how to cook from her. She also often takes me to many places. I went on trips to Wellington and Auckland. The views were beautiful and I was impressed. In addition, she gives me\u00a0<\/span>advice<\/span>\u00a0when I\u2019m in trouble and helps me. Thanks to her, I have been enjoying my life here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, I’ll talk about my friends. Fortunately, I was able to make a lot of friends. At first, I spent time with some girls who talked to me in Mentor class, which is like a homeroom, but they are Filipino and sometimes talk in Filipino. I didn’t understand it, so I couldn’t join the conversation\u00a0I didn\u2019t like it, so I left their group. I didn\u2019t know what\u00a0I\u00a0should do, so I talked to a girl who was sitting behind me in music class.\u00a0Then she answered my question, and I made a band with her. Thanks to her, I was able to make a lot of\u00a0kind\u00a0friends. I eat lunch with her group\u00a0and when\u00a0I don’t understand English, they say it again or use easier words. Thanks to them, I can go to school happily.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0studying abroad, I\u00a0have not experienced\u00a0only fun things. I face various challenges such as a language barrier and building good relationships. I’m sure there will be many difficulties in the future as well, but I won\u2019t give up. Giving up is easy, but if I keep challenging myself without giving up, I can discover a new side of myself. This is what I\u2019ve learned.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, I\u2019ve learned that I shouldn\u2019t stop talking even though I can’t speak English well. To be honest, I didn\u2019t like talking with my host mom at first because I was not able to continue\u00a0the conversation.\u00a0However, the reason why the conversation didn\u2019t continue was that I stopped trying. Even when I had something I wanted to say, I didn’t say it and kept it to myself because I didn\u2019t know how to say it. However, I\u2019ve realized that nothing is conveyed unless I try to say it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One day, my host mom said, “If you don’t understand, ask me and\u00a0then try to\u00a0say what you want to say.” I thought\u00a0it was a good idea,\u00a0<\/span>so too<\/span>\u00a0so I started to say what I wanted to say. For example, I started to talk about my school life and my classmates. I talk a lot now, and I feel that it’s fun. My host mom talks to me much more often than before.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Even though I can\u2019t speak English perfectly, I will say what I think anyway.” This is what I always try to keep in mind. If I hadn\u2019t come abroad, I couldn\u2019t have learned this.\u00a0I can learn about my strengths and weaknesses like this. If I learn about my weaknesses, I try to think positively.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Time is a mysterious thing. If I think it has already been three months since I left Japan, it feels fast. If I think that I will be in New Zealand until November, it still feels like a long way off. Anyway, I promise not to waste this precious time studying abroad so that I won\u2019t have any regrets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, I would like to write a message to my family.\u00a0I realized now that\u00a0I used to\u00a0be spoiled. I\u00a0am grateful to\u00a0my family for sending me abroad. Unlike my brother and sister, I was not active and I was a crybaby. I often cried and sometimes even ran away from challenges. However, thank you for trusting me and letting me study abroad. I have been trying many new things. Of course, sometimes I cry, but at such times, I don’t blame myself. Instead, I think, “These tears are necessary for me now.” In this study abroad, I’ll do\u00a0my best to improve not only my English skills but also myself as a person, and I’ll enjoy the rest of my study abroad life.
