Kia\u00a0ora! I am Miu, attending Central Hawke\u2019s Bay College. Half a year has passed since I came to New Zealand, and four months have passed since I wrote and posted my first essay on this\u00a0website.\u00a0I feel that time\u00a0is flying by every day. This time, I would like to\u00a0write\u00a0another essay focusing on the friends I have made in New Zealand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I could make a lot of friends in New Zealand. They make my life in New Zealand more enjoyable. I\u2019m really lucky to spend time\u00a0every day with them. Among them, let me introduce my best friend. My best friend is\u00a0Rubiane. I call her Rubi. She is an exchange student from Brazil, and she\u00a0was\u00a0in New Zealand for\u00a0five\u00a0and a half months. She and I first met in ESOL class (English class for exchange students). When we talked in a pair conversation practice, my first impression of her was that she was good at speaking English, and the way she asked questions without hesitation looked cool. I felt a connection with her when I learned that her host sister and my host brother were dating. I invited her to hang out with me because it was one of my goals to make friends of different nationalities, and I thought I must not miss the great chance to make friends with her. She accepted my invitation in a friendly way, and we became really close through hanging out together. I am glad that I was brave enough to invite her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our favorite place is the main street in\u00a0our town. We\u00a0hung out\u00a0there at least once a week.\u00a0She often invited me to hang out together, too.\u00a0One surprising thing was that she suddenly came to my house on a day off. She knocked on the door, and I was woken up by the sound. I was so glad to be invited to hang out with her. On the other hand, I like planning things in advance, so I was really surprised by Rubi\u2019s behavior. And I was a little frustrated, so I said to her, \u201cPlease\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0come suddenly. Can you please tell me that you are coming at least the night before?\u201d Rubi was so surprised to hear that. She said, \u201cIt is normal to hang out without planning in Brazil. It is a happy thing when people visit your house suddenly because people in Brazil love spending time with others.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, when I am with her, I can learn about cultural differences.\u00a0I think it\u00a0is\u00a0amazing\u00a0that\u00a0we’re\u00a0together in New Zealand even though we grew up in different countries and\u00a0different cultures. At the same time,\u00a0I think I\u00a0am so glad to learn about Brazilian culture even though I am in New Zealand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rubi is\u00a0a really active\u00a0girl, and I learned many things from her. I would like to write about some of the ways she inspired me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, she is extremely active. When I was in Japan, I thought I was active. But my idea of being active completely changed. She\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0afraid of making mistakes or failing. When we went to some parties where there were Kiwi people who were the same age as us, she talked to many people. Eventually, she became friends with all the people there, and I could make many friends as well thanks to her. I was surprised by her proactiveness because I was satisfied with talking only with Rubi. Seeing her bravery encouraged me to be brave enough to speak to Kiwis who I thought spoke English so fast at school.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, she has the ability to express her opinions clearly. I think there are people who imagine that expressing one\u2019s opinion means complaining. I was one of them. However, for her, expressing her opinion includes not only complaints but also positive opinions such as \u201cThank you,\u201d \u201cI like that,\u201d and \u201cI want to do it.\u201d I realized by watching her that I had not been good at expressing my true feelings. We sometimes had arguments, but she explained to me why she thought that way, and at the same time, she listened to my opinion without getting emotional. Through these experiences, I learned that expressing one\u2019s opinion clearly doesn\u2019t mean denying other people, but it is an important way to understand each other.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are too many things to write here that I learned from Rubi. Also, not only what I learned, but also the time I spent with her\u00a0definitely became\u00a0one of\u00a0my treasures. Sharing each other\u2019s cultures,\u00a0laughing\u00a0and joking around with each other, talking about our views on love until we forgot to sleep\u2014everything was\u00a0such\u00a0fun.\u00a0On the day of her departure for\u00a0Brazil, we gave each other a tight hug\u00a0at the airport. I had mixed feelings. I was so glad to have met her in New Zealand, but\u00a0I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0want to be apart from her. I\u00a0wished\u00a0to spend more time with her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Time is limited, and time flies. As I wrote before, half a year has passed since I came to New Zealand. Through\u00a0my farewell\u00a0to Rubi, I have realized that my time in New Zealand is more precious than ever. How I spend the remaining four months in New Zealand is up to me.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0going to make the most of every day and every moment I can spend with my dear host family and friends.\u00a0And I am going to keep challenging myself with many things so that, when I get back to Japan, I can confidently say, “I have grown up,” to everyone who has been supporting me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
