Hi, I\u2019m Aiko. I go to Central Hawke\u2019s Bay College as a year 12 student. It has already been six months since I came to New Zealand, which means more than half of my time studying abroad is over. When I was in Japan, I thought that ten months would be such a long time that I could do anything that I wanted to. However, time goes by surprisingly fast. Moreover, it is my first time staying abroad, so there are many things that are completely new to me. This makes me feel not only excited but also confused. In this essay, I\u2019d like to write about my life in New Zealand so far.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Firstly, I\u2019m going to write about my host family and my life with them in New Zealand. I love my host family, and I think I am lucky to be hosted by them. My host family consists of my host father, my host mother, and my nine-year-old host sister. Also, they have a dog named Pipi. They are so nice to me, and thanks to them, I\u2019ve experienced a lot of things here. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0One of my favorites is food. My host mother is good at cooking. All of her dishes are so good. The food is very different from Japanese food. They eat various foods from all over the world, such as sushi, tacos, fish and chips, and pies. I feel that New Zealanders and Japanese people have different perspectives on food. I think people in New Zealand tend to eat whenever they want, whatever they want, and as much as they want. So, they usually buy and cook a lot of food, and I often see them leave some food. I don\u2019t want to leave any food even if I don\u2019t really like it or I\u2019m already full. Even now, this confuses me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Also, my host mother always says \u201chelp yourself\u201d to me. It means I should feel free to have some food. At first, I often hesitated to eat after we had tea or while I was waiting for tea. But as I mentioned before, they eat whenever they want to eat, so now I\u2019ve gotten used to eating a lot of food like them without hesitation. Unfortunately, it makes me fat, though.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Secondly, let me talk about my school life. The classes that I take now are textiles, hospitality, PE, ESOL, music, and math. In New Zealand, students can choose their classes, and if they don’t like a class, they can change it. Therefore, students actively participate in class.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Anyway, my favorite class is hospitality because we usually cook at least twice a week, and we cook many kinds of dishes, all of which are so delicious. Also, I have been able to try various dishes that I had never tried before, so I like hospitality the best.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0By the way, I am a member of the cricket and netball teams. These sports are not common in Japan, so at first, I didn’t know how to play them. On the other hand, both cricket and netball are really common sports for Kiwis, so they didn’t tell me the details about the rules unless I asked. So, it was one of my struggles. Sports are divided into winter sports and summer sports here. I\u2019m playing netball, which is a winter sport, this term, and I\u2019ve understood the basic rules, but even now, I often get penalties without knowing what I have done wrong, so it confuses me a lot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The next thing that I want to write about is one of the school events. My favorite event so far is Kapa Haka. At this college, we are divided into four houses, and each house has a color: red, yellow, green, or blue. The houses compete against each other in school events. In Kapa Haka, we sang some M\u0101ori songs and male students <\/span>did a M\u0101ori dance called the haka<\/span>. It was hard for me because we had a lot of Kapa haka practice, including on weekends, and the songs were in M\u0101ori, so it was difficult to remember the lyrics. In addition, the practice was led by M\u0101ori people, so they often gave us instructions using M\u0101ori words, which was a good opportunity to learn some M\u0101ori words, but at first, I struggled to understand what they said. On the performance day, we wore M\u0101ori makeup and accessories. That was such a good experience. Actually, I had seen the haka on TV before, but that was my first time watching it in person, and it was so cool and more powerful than I expected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In conclusion, I\u2019m having a really good time in New Zealand. Even though I have not only enjoyable experiences but also some struggles, I\u2019d like to make a lot of good memories by being positive and curious.<\/span>\u00a0
