My name is Miku, and I am currently a Year 12 student at Pompallier Catholic College. My journey in New Zealand has been about more than just learning English. It has been a journey of discovering myself, growing as a person, and becoming more independent. Through this essay, I’d like to share some of the experiences, memories, and lessons that have made my time in New Zealand so special.

One of the most important parts of my life in New Zealand has been my host family. They’re my host mother, father, sister and brother. I love them because they are so kind and warm. They treat me like a real family member. Thanks to them, I feel very at home when spending time with them. There are many kinds of animals living here as well. Moreover, we’re living on top of a hill and we’re surrounded by nature. The view from our house is so pretty, and we can see a sky full of stars at night. I’m such a lucky person.

Looking back on my time in New Zealand, my final dance recital remains the most special to me. That day gave me confidence I had never felt before. On the recital day, I was chosen for the Outstanding Dancer Award. When my dance teacher announced the award, he talked about my journey and how hard I worked. The moment I was chosen, everyone cheered and applauded me. My dance members hugged me and told me that they were proud of me. Surrounded by their smiles, applause, and warm hugs, I felt truly happy and grateful. When I first started attending the dance classes, I was honestly a little scared of my dance members because everyone was energetic and outgoing. However, as the classes went on, they gradually accepted me as part of the group. And now, I feel so grateful that I met such wonderful friends.

More than anything, the experience gave me so much confidence in myself. Before coming to New Zealand, I didn’t have much confidence in myself, and I often found it difficult to truly like who I was. However, throughout my life in New Zealand, the most important thing I have learned is how to love and accept myself. It’s not always easy, but I believe it’s one of the most important things we can learn in order to make our lives more fulfilling. I also believe that as we gain confidence, we naturally learn to love ourselves. In other words, what I’d like to say is that we should never give up on our own potential just because we lack confidence. During my time in New Zealand, there were many times when I almost gave up because I lacked confidence in myself. However, I never stopped making an effort. By taking small steps and continuing to work hard in my own way, I began to experience many moments when I felt that my efforts had paid off. Even though I had once felt hopeless because I couldn’t do anything well, each of these experiences helped me build confidence in myself. I believe that when we learn to recognize our own efforts and growth, we can begin to love ourselves a little more, too. Through this journey, I finally discovered something that was truly important to me.

None of these precious experiences and lessons would have been possible without my family, who gave me the opportunity to study abroad. I can’t thank them enough for believing in me, even though I was still young and inexperienced, and for agreeing with my decision to come to New Zealand. There were many difficult moments that I had to overcome, but I’ve never regretted coming here, because I was able to see every mistake and every experience as an opportunity to learn and grow. I learned about the values of many people, and my horizons broadened. Studying abroad was an important experience in my life. Thank you so much.

From New Zealand, with gratitude for every encounter and every lesson.
