I\u2019m Kaori Nishio. I go to Bream Bay College with Yuria who is my partner. I\u2019ll write about what has changed me in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>First, my host family has changed me. My host family is formed by four people, Chris who is my host father, Alex who is my host mother, Cassie and Ella who are my host sisters. Chris and Alex work in downstairs at home. Cassie is sixteen-year-old girl and she also goes to Bream Bay College. Ella is a thirteen-year-old girl and she goes to Whangarei Girls\u2019 High School. They\u2019re very kind to me, and whenever I had obstacles with my English, they tried to find an easier way to explain me, and gave me advice. They have made my English better, and improved my understanding of English. Also, Chris and Alex have changed me. I don\u2019t really like mushrooms. However, one of my favourite food in NZ, lasagne, has mushrooms, and I didn\u2019t notice that I had eaten mushrooms! Now, I can eat mushrooms!\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Next, my classes at school have changed me. I take English, ESOL, math, music, art, history and geography. I\u2019ve written many essays for my assessment. For English, I wrote two essays about a short film, \u201cFish out of Water\u201d and a journey before. It was easier for me to write about the short film. However, it was very difficult for me to write about the journey. It\u2019s because I needed to read a poem, a book and watch a movie. Then, I needed to think about a journey of them. I actually didn\u2019t understand them and didn\u2019t know what to write at all. However, my English teacher advised me a lot. For example, she told me to read chapter nine of the book to understand the journey. Thanks to her, I could finish my essay and I found a different perspective between me and the characters in the poem, the book and the movie. In my opinion, teachers in NZ teach not only facts, but also how to think and have a deep understanding of them. This helps us to have our own opinions about the problems. I noticed \u201cthinking\u201d is a very important thing. In Japan, to be honest, I didn\u2019t think very much about anything. For the exams, we had to memorise many facts. Memorising is important, but more than that, we should try to think about what we learned. I felt this strongly when I did my history assessment. For the assessment, I needed to collect the information about the Vietnam War (We could choose a topic, and I chose this war). Then, I needed to think about why America got involved in the Vietnam War, how the war affected the people, how America\u2019s involvement escalated in Vietnam and what the significance of the war for New Zealand was. I did know about the year, the name of the war and who fought in the war. However, I had never thought about those questions. Then, I realized that even about the events that occurred in Japan, I don\u2019t know much. I must have overlooked many important things about Japan. We need to know facts, but at the same time, we need to think about them critically. It\u2019s the most important thing in studying. By the way, I had an assessment about Ruakaka estuary which is located in Ruakaka, near my college. For the assessment, I went to the estuary and searched about wildlife there whole day. In the morning, I searched animals in the beach and in the afternoon, I snorkelled in the ocean to find fish and shells. It was fun, but after that, I had to write four essays\u2026 \u00a0Anyway, the classes and assessments in NZ are challenging, but I\u2019m so happy that they have changed me to have a different perspective of facts.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Third, my friends have changed me. I\u2019ll talk about my friend, Anna. Anna is honestly good at everything, for example, studying, and playing sports. Whenever we did our assessments, she got excellences. As I told you above, for the assessments, we need to show our understanding. Her understanding of studying is based on what we\u2019ve learned but she adds her own understanding. Therefore, when we got our assessment, I was always surprised with her opinion. Of course, her opinion is different from my opinion, and it becomes an opportunity to know a new point of view. We take the same art class. She is very clever and her art is amazing. She always gets excellences for the art assessment. We do the assessment of not only painting but also writing about an artist. To tell the truth, I didn\u2019t like writing about the artist, because I needed to read a book or search about the artist and write a lot. Then, one day, my art teacher gave us a writing assessment. I was under the impression that I had done a good job, even though I knew I hadn\u2019t done my best. I thought I am an international student and my teacher wouldn\u2019t expect so much from me. However, I was scolded by my teacher about the assessment, and she asked me to see Anna\u2019s work. When I saw her work, I was shocked. It\u2019s because, her work was approximately five times greater than my work. She knows English, but I could see that she did her best for the assessment. I realized that I made an excuse that I don\u2019t know much about English, so I can let up. I regretted what I did for the assessment. My teacher gave me a chance to do the assessment again. Of course, I did the assessment again and Anna helped me when I got questions of the artist. I really tried the assessment my best this time and the teacher was proud of me. It is true that doing nothing will produce nothing, doing something produce something. After this happened I found the words of Mother Teresa. It showed that \u201cGod doesn&#8217;t require us to succeed; he only requires that you try.\u201d I sympathised with these words deeply. I decided to try everything that I face. I think success is important, but without trying we cannot get success.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Finally, my partner Yuria has changed me. In Japan, I didn\u2019t talk with her lots. When I knew my partner would be Yuria, I was surprised. I couldn\u2019t believe that I would spend ten months with her actually. However, she became my great rival in New Zealand. We take the same history, English, ESOL, and music class. We help each other sometimes. Whenever I see her doing very hard, I am aware of that I should do very hard. She arouses rivalry in my mind and encourages me as well. By the way, we\u2019ll perform a Japanese song, \u201cEikou no Kakehashi\u201d for Music Night which is my school\u2019s music event. She has amazing ability of playing the piano and has gotten some great grades for her music exam. I\u2019m really happy to perform a song with such a great pianist! It was the first time for me to spend such a long time with people other than my family. I\u2019m glad to be her partner.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>So far, about seven months have passed. I have only three months. I want to spend time wisely, keep experiencing and learning new things, smile all the time. I\u2019ll never forget that thanks to my family\u2019s support, I can have great experiences in New Zealand.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Kaori
