Hello. I’m Ayaka Nakamura and I go to Te Kuiti High School.\u3000Te Kuiti is a small and lovely town. It\u2019s famous for shearing sheep. In April, a festival called ‘Muster Day’ was held in Te Kuiti. A shearing competition was the main event of the festival but I was excited about the other event in which a number of sheep run along the main road of this town. The sight was amazing! There is a Japanese garden by the main road because Te Kuiti is a sister city of Tatsuno, Nagano.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u00a0I live in Mapiu with my great host family. My host father is Steve, who is a teacher in Te Kuiti High School. He likes driving and fishing. I went to the beach for fishing with him. It was my first experience. He caught a big fish! I couldn’t catch any though. Sarah is my host mother, who likes scrap booking and cooking. She made some cards for me. Those are so delicate and beautiful. Also she likes knitting and she makes a hat for Taylor, my host sister aged 9. She is naughty but when her little brothers come, she turns into their older sister.<\/div>\n
Mapiu is quite a nice place. The only problem here is cell phone signal. It is 600 meters above sea level, so in the morning of a clear day, it is frosty. We’ve got -4c one day. However, I like even these freezing days, because the view of hills which I can see from the drive way is magnificent. I can see snow! My favourite view can be seen at night. That is a starry sky. A lot of stars twinkle in the sky on clear nights and we can see the Milky Way every time. It’s so cool. I want you to see that.<\/div>\n

I went to Mt. Taranaki to snowboard with host family, one of my friends and her family during last holidays. I was so excited about going to there because I love to snowboard. It was a beautiful day so I could enjoy snowboarding. Also I was able to see a fantastic view, which is different from the mountains in Japan. Mt. Taranaki has a lot of rocks and no trees. The rocks were covered with snow. I have been to various mountains to snowboard in Japan but I’ve never seen such a view. I can’t express how beautiful the sight was. As you know, there is a lot of pretty nature in New Zealand and I love it. I guess 1st graders are looking forward to seeing such beautiful nature.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
You would find a lot of differences between New Zealand and Japan if you came here. I’ll tell you some of my funny discoveries.<\/div>\n
I went to the hairdresser with my friend to cut my hair last month. I thought the staff were going to keep my coat and bag first. But they didn’t! I didn’t know where I should put my coat and bag on, so I had my hair cut with my coat on.\u00a0<\/div>\n
The other thing is about our school song. To my surprise, we sing the school song to guitar accompaniment. I felt it strange because we use a piano when we sing our school song in Japan. And at that time, I noticed that there is no piano in the hall. I asked why they use a guitar to sing the song, then one of my friends told me ‘Maori people don’t use piano so much.’ I could find many differences between New Zealand and Japan. It’s interesting to find those and I can understand both cultures more deeply when I saw the reason why those are different.\u00a0This is a good point of studying abroad, right?<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
My parents have let me experience a lot of things which I said I wanted to try but actually I gave most of them up. Now I know how much I have disappointed them. This time, I won’t let them feel so. I want to tell them how wonderful the life in New Zealand is.<\/div>\n

There are a lot of people who I love around me such as my host family and kiwi friends. Thanks to them, I can enjoy my life in New Zealand. I’m happy I could meet them here.\u00a0<\/div>\n
Also my classmates of Eiryu, family, friends and teachers in Japan, are my big emotional support even if I can’t see them. I want to tell them \u201cThank you\u201d.<\/div>\n

When I come back to Japan, I will tell everyone about my great experiences with heap of photos. Please don’t be bored before seeing all of my pictures. It’ll take a long time to see all of them because I have taken at least 3000 already!<\/div>\n
