Kia ora! How have you guys been? I’ve been doing pretty good! I’m Yuki, and I attend Paeroa College as a Year 12 student. I can’t believe half a year has already passed since I came to New Zealand. I’d like to share a bit about my life here.
First, I’ll talk about my host family. It’s been two months since I moved to a new host family. I’m living with them in Hikutaia, a short drive from Paeroa. There are four people in my family, my host father, host mother and two host sisters. One of them is in the same year as me, and the other is in Year 10. They also attend Paeroa College. My host parents are friendly and easygoing. My older host sister was originally just a friend of mine, so I was surprised and happy when I found out she was going to be part of my new host family. My younger host sister used to be shy around me, but she has come to joke with me. I am really happy.
Second, I’ll talk about my friends. On our first two days of school, we were divided into several groups and attended first aid training. Naturally, I felt nervous when I arrived at the classroom. Then, three students, who are now my friends, started talking to me. One of them doesn’t come to school much, so we’ve grown a bit distant. However, the other two are in a pretty big friend group, and thanks to that, I was able to make a lot of new friends. I realized how lucky I was. Many of my friends are interested in Japan, and sometimes they even know things that make me go, “How do you know that!?” They’re also really fun to be around and always make me laugh. Every day, I do my best to understand what they say. Sometimes, I end up saying strange things to them, but they always turn it into something funny and tell me, “Just say whatever you want to us. Don’t be afraid.” Every time they say that, I feel so glad that I came to study abroad and became friends with them.
I’ve been joining basketball, badminton, and pottery clubs to make some friends and try new things. Also, thanks to my friend, who is also my host sister, I joined the Student Volunteer Army (SVA), a New Zealand student group formed after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. We work on community activities. I have been interested in volunteer activities for a long time, and I also volunteered in Japan for several years. Here, I mainly look after children at a care house and cook meals with them. I also help at events and assist teachers after school. By doing volunteer work, I can connect with many different people and feel appreciated, which makes me feel really good. I think this is why I enjoy volunteering so much. I’m enjoying volunteering here while hoping I can be helpful to someone in New Zealand as well.
Lastly, I’m grateful to my host family, friends, and teachers at school for accepting me as I am, as well as to my teachers in Japan who support my study abroad, my parents, and my younger siblings who sometimes reach out to me.
I have only four months left, so I’m going to enjoy every moment and take the best memories back to Japan with me！

Kia ora! みなさん元気ですか？私は元気にやっています！Paeroa CollegeにYear12として通っているゆうきです。ニュージーランドに来てから、もう半年が過ぎたなんて信じられません。ここでの生活について少しお話ししたいと思います。
まず、ホストファミリーについてです。新しいホストファミリーに移ってから2か月が経ちました。私はPaeroaから車で少しの距離にあるHikutaiaに住んでいます。家族は4人で、ホストファザー、ホストマザー、そして2人のホストシスターがいます。1人は私と同じ学年で、もう1人はYear10です。2人ともPaeroa Collegeに通っています。ホストペアレンツはとてもフレンドリーで、気さくな人たちです。上のホストシスターはもともと私の友達だったので、新しいホストファミリーの一員になると知ったときは驚きつつも嬉しかったです。下のホストシスターは最初、私に対して少し人見知りしていましたが、今では冗談を言い合えるようになりました。本当に嬉しいです。
次に、友達についてです。学校の最初の2日間、私たちはいくつかのグループに分かれて応急処置の研修を受けました。教室に着いたときは当然緊張していました。すると、今では友達となった3人の生徒が話しかけてくれました。そのうち1人はあまり学校に来ていないので少し疎遠になってしまいましたが、残りの2人は大きな友達グループに属していて、そのおかげで私はたくさんの新しい友達を作ることができました。自分は本当に運が良かったと感じています。私の友達の多くは日本に興味があり、「そんなことまで知ってるの!?」と驚くようなことを知っていることもあります。彼らはとてもノリがよく、いつも私を笑わせてくれます。毎日、私は必死に彼らの言っていることを理解しようとしています。時には、彼らに対して変なことを言ってしまうこともありますが、彼らはそれさえも笑いに変えてくれて、「言いたいことは何でもとりあえず私たちに言ってみて、怖がらなくても大丈夫だよ。」と言ってくれます。そう言ってもらえるたびに、留学して本当によかった、この人たちと友達になれてよかった、と心から感じます。
私は友達を作ったり新しいことを経験したりするために、バスケットボール部、バドミントン部、陶芸部に入っています。また、ホストシスターでもある友達のおかげで、「学生ボランティア軍（SVA）」という団体にも参加しました。SVAは2011年のクライストチャーチ地震の後に設立されたニュージーランドの学生団体で、地域での活動を行っています。私は昔からボランティア活動に興味があり、日本でも数年間ボランティアをしてきました。ここでは主にケアハウスで子供たちの面倒を見たり、一緒にご飯を作ったりしています。他にも、イベントの手伝いや放課後に学校で先生のお手伝いもしています。ボランティアをすることで、いろいろな人と関わることができ、感謝されるととても嬉しくなります。これが私がボランティア活動を好きな理由なのだと思います。ニュージーランドでも誰かの役に立てたらいいなと思いながら、楽しく活動を続けています。
最後に、私を受け入れてくれたホストファミリー、友達、学校の先生方、そして留学を支えてくれている日本の先生方、両親、たまに連絡をくれる弟や妹に感謝しています。
泣いても笑ってもあと4か月。残りの時間を思いっきり楽しんで、最高の思い出を日本に持ち帰ります！
