Kia ora! My name is Miu. I attend Central Hawke’s Bay College as a Year 12 student. I am so glad that I can write a “Message from New Zealand,” which I had been reading before I came to New Zealand. I have been experiencing a lot of things, including both good things and bad things.
First, let me introduce something I’m interested in. It is a Māori class. I was thinking that I would like to learn about Māori culture when I was in Japan. So, I managed to take a Māori class even though the dean said, “It is a difficult class.” I’m taking a Year 10 Māori class. The teacher and the students in the class are so kind and teach me gently if I have questions. The distance between the teacher and the students is extremely close, so laughing doesn’t stop during the class. I really like the atmosphere. However, it took a long time for me to realize that the class was fun. When I first started taking the Māori class, I couldn’t understand what they were doing, so I was confused. It was not easy to learn a new language that is not my mother tongue. So, I reviewed what I had learned that day at home after school every day. And by doing so, every time I took a class, I started understanding the content, and I came to enjoy the class more. The students in my Māori class are so friendly, and I can talk a lot because of it. Moreover, if I say, “please teach me,” three students are willing to teach me. I’ve come to like the Māori class more because of them. I also sing Māori songs in class. When I told my Māori class teacher that I like the songs, she invited me to Kapa Haka practice. Kapa Haka is a kind of haka. I can’t believe so many wonderful things really happened to me. Kapa Haka is one of the things that I had wanted to do. It was because when I saw Kapa Haka at the local festival in my district, I was fascinated by its powerful voice that cut through my body and by its absolutely powerful performance. I will do my best in practice performing like that.
Secondly, I will introduce my host family. My host family members are my host father Anton, my host mother Monica, my host sister Annabel, my host brother Alex, two cats, and one dog. They are so kind and warm to me, like sunshine. When I tried to make friends at school, I asked a girl in my mentor class (it’s like a homeroom) to have lunch together, and I ate lunch with her group. However, every time I spoke in English, I was laughed at by the boys in the group. I was very uncomfortable and sad because they were the first students I spoke to. I told my host mother and host father about it. Then my host mother said, “It is great to live in another country and use a language that is not your first language, so you shouldn’t mind it.” And my host father said, “If they make you feel bad again, you can say, ‘My father is Yakuza!!’ haha!” Thanks to them, I was able to pull myself together. I am always helped by their kindness.
My host sister Annebel takes me to various places. She is 15 years old. Thanks to her, I have been able to make friends in a lot of places. And I love her smile. It makes me cheerful. My host family lets me experience a lot of things such as eating lamb, going fishing, and going to an aquarium or a zoo. Those are very “lekker!” It means good or delicious in Afrikaans. Actually, my host family is from South Africa, so they have taught me some Afrikaans words. If I do something fun or new, they ask me, “Lekker?” and then I, of course, say, “Lekker!” It’s my favorite Afrikaans word. It’s a little communication, but every time I say the word, I feel more satisfied. I am really glad to live with them. I am grateful to them. I love my host family.
Third, I would like to introduce my friends. When school started, it was hard to make friends. A week later, I was able to ask a girl in my drama class to have lunch together, and I ate lunch with her group. There were four girls in the group, and they accepted me willingly. They have various personalities and they are very funny, so they give me energy. Not only at school, but also after school, I enjoy spending time with them. They invite me to hang out and do things such as going to the theater and having BBQs. It is a treasure for me to spend time with them. However, when I talk with them, I still have problems with my English. It is hard for me to remember the words that are normal for Kiwis. Even if I can use them, I can’t make myself understood because my pronunciation is not accurate. If I could go back to Japan, I would definitely study more words and pronunciation. I will do my best to study English more to speak English more fluently.
Finally, let me introduce my favorite Māori word. It is “Aroha.” It means love and kindness. When I learned the word, I felt it was wonderful to include love and kindness in one word. Let me show you some examples of aroha. When I pass by Kiwis, they smile at me. In addition, in PE class, if there is a good play, everyone praises it and says “Nice!” even though it is the opponent’s play. Every time I experience kindness like that, my heart becomes warmer. When I learned the word “Aroha,” I realized that this kind of heart-warming attitude showing love and kindness is expressed by this word.
It’s only been two months since I came to NZ, but I feel like I left Japan a long time ago. I am trying to say “Yes, I want to do it” when I have an opportunity to do something new because I have no idea whether it will be fun or not. And there are more fun things than bad things. I am grateful to the teachers in Japan for giving the advice that we should try things whenever we have a chance. Actually, I am going to do a triathlon for the first time tomorrow. I can’t wait! I will keep trying new things and do my best to improve my English.

こんにちは！私はみうです。現在、セントラルホークスベイカレッジに12年生として通っています。「ニュージーランドからのメッセージ」はニュージーランドに来る前から読んでいたので、今回自分が書けることがとても嬉しいです。こちらでは、良いことも悪いことも含めて、たくさんの経験をしています。
まず、私が興味を持っていることについて紹介します。それはマオリの授業です。日本にいたときから、マオリ文化を学びたいと思っていました。だから、学部長に「難しいクラスだよ」と言われたにも関わらず、マオリの授業を取ることにしました。そして、私は10年生のマオリのクラスを受けています。先生やクラスの生徒はとても優しく、質問があれば丁寧に教えてくれます。先生と生徒の距離がとても近くて、授業中は笑いが絶えません。この雰囲気が私は大好きです。しかし、この授業が楽しいと気づくまでには時間がかかりました。最初は何をしているのか理解できず、混乱しました。母語ではない言語を学ぶのは簡単ではありません。そこで、毎日放課後に家で「その日に学んだこと」を振り返るようにしました。そうすることで、授業を受けるたびに内容が理解でき、より楽しめるようになりました。マオリのクラスの生徒たちはとてもフレンドリーで、そのおかげでたくさん話すことができます。さらに、私が「教えてください」と言うと、3人の生徒が教えてくれることもあります。そうして、私はますますマオリの授業が好きになりました。授業ではマオリの歌も歌います。授業の先生にそのことを伝えたら、カパハカの練習にも誘ってくれました。カパハカはハカの一種です。こんな素敵なことが私に起こるなんて、本当に信じられません。カパハカは私がやりたいことの一つです。というのも、地元のお祭りでカパハカを見たとき、全身に響く力強い歌声と圧倒的なパフォーマンスに魅了されたからです。練習では、そのようなパフォーマンスができるように頑張りたいと思います。
次に、ホストファミリーについて紹介します。私のホストファミリーは、ホストファーザーのアントン、ホストマザーのモニカ、ホストシスターのアナベル、ホストブラザーのアレックス、そして猫2匹と犬1匹です。家族は太陽のように温かく親切です。学校で友達を作ろうとしたとき、メンター（ホームルームのようなクラス）の女の子に一緒にランチを食べようと声をかけ、彼女のグループでランチを食べました。しかし、英語を話すたびに男子たちに笑われ、とても居心地が悪く悲しい気持ちになりました。初めて話す相手だったからです。そのことをホストマザーとホストファーザーに話すと、マザーは「他国で生活して、自分の母語ではない言葉を使えるのは素晴らしいことだから、気にしなくていい」と言ってくれました。ファーザーは「もしまた嫌な気持ちにさせられたら、“うちの父はヤクザだ！”って言えばいいんだよ（笑）」と言ってくれました。おかげで、私は気持ちを立て直すことができました。彼らの優しさにはいつも助けられています。
ホストシスターのアナベルは、私を色々な場所に連れて行ってくれます。彼女は15歳で、彼女のおかげでたくさんの友達ができました。私は彼女の笑顔が大好きで、それを見ると元気になります。ホストファミリーは、ラム肉を食べたり、釣りに行ったり、水族館や動物園に連れて行ってくれたり、たくさんの体験をさせてくれます。それらは全部「ラッカー（lekker）！」です。南アフリカ出身のホストファミリーなので、いくつかアフリカーンス語も教えてくれました。楽しいことや新しいことをすると、「lekker？」と聞かれ、もちろん私は「lekker！」と答えます。このちょっとしたコミュニケーションが毎回、私を嬉しくさせます。彼らの家に住めて本当に良かったと感じていますし、心から感謝しています。私はホストファミリーが大好きです。
次に、友達について紹介します。学校が始まったばかりの頃、友達を作るのは難しかったです。しかし、1週間後、ドラマの授業の女の子に一緒にランチを食べようと誘い、彼女のグループでランチを食べることができました。そのグループには4人の女の子がいて、快く受け入れてくれました。彼女たちはそれぞれ個性的で面白く、私に元気をくれます。学校だけでなく、放課後も一緒に劇場に行ったり、BBQをしたりと、楽しい時間を過ごさせてくれます。彼女たちと過ごす時間は私にとって宝物です。しかし、会話ではまだ英語に苦労しています。私が覚えづらかった単語も、キウイにとっては普通の単語です。また、発音が正確でないために意味が伝わらないこともあります。もし日本に戻れるなら、もっと単語や発音を勉強しておくのにと思います。これからも英語をもっと勉強して、流暢に話せるよう頑張ります。
最後に、私の好きなマオリ語を紹介します。それは「Aroha」です。「愛」と「優しさ」を意味します。この言葉に出会ったとき、1つの言葉に愛と優しさが込められていることに感動しました。「Aroha」の例をいくつか紹介します。キウイの人たちは、私に会うと笑顔で接してくれます。また、体育の授業でも、良いプレーがあると敵のプレーであってもみんな「ナイス！」と褒めます。そうした優しさに触れるたび、私の心は温かくなります。そして、「Aroha」を学んだとき、それが愛と優しさを意味することに気づきました。
ニュージーランドに来てまだ2か月しか経っていませんが、日本を離れたのはずいぶん前のことのように感じます。私は、何かに挑戦するチャンスがあるとき、「やってみたい！」と言うようにしています。それが楽しいか楽しくないか、やってみないとわからないからです。そして、楽しいことの方が多いです。日本にいたときに先生方からそうアドバイスをいただけたことにも感謝しています。実は、明日初めてトライアスロンに挑戦します。待ちきれません！これからも新しいことに挑戦し、英語の向上に全力で取り組みます。
