Hi, I’m Mahiro! I’m in Year 12 at Tauraroa Area School. I’ve been staying in New Zealand for nine months. I feel like I’ve been living here for a long time. I really hope I can be a Kiwi.
My host family are my host father John, my host mother Tabitha, my host brother Blane, my host sisters Libby and Harper, and an exchange student from Brazil, Paola. Their pets are Archie, which is a dog, Freya, Willow and Debu, which are cats, and Suki, a bearded dragon. My host sister Libby is studying abroad in Japan and Paola has gone back home to Brazil, so I’m not living with them anymore. I really miss them because they are my best friends. We are so close, and my host parents call me “their Japanese daughter.” You think my host family is the best, don’t you? I know. I’ve argued with Libby many times. For example, I kept talking to her when she wasn’t in the mood. I didn’t realize that she just wanted some space. I kept talking because I wanted her to be happy, but it annoyed her,. Libby and I have talked about life, the future, our personalities, and lots of things. I’ve learned a lot from her. Thanks to her, I’m pretty sure I have changed for the better in many ways. I appreciate her so much. We are like real siblings.
I talk a lot every day, even during class. I ask a lot of questions, and I talk to strangers. I’m originally a very sociable person. In Japan, I felt like I stood out a bit, and I spoke in front of people as nonchalantly as I could since most Japanese people are quiet and shy. I’m in New Zealand now, and I don’t feel I stand out. Everyone is so sociable. I feel like I’ve found my place. It was not difficult to make friends because everyone was so nice regardless of gender. I especially love my school’s teachers. They always care about me. I usually don’t like teachers, but I came to like the teachers here right away. And the people at my dance studio are nice, too. I was welcomed into the dance studio. I participated in lots of competitions, and in one of them I got first place. Lots of people supported me.
My best memory in New Zealand was the school ball. A few days before the ball, my friends and I walked around five shops to choose ball dresses in Auckland. On that day, before the ball, we got ready together. Doing these things was my dream. I had watched a lot of movies about school balls since I was little, so I was glad to be able to experience one. I really loved it.
Only about 30 days are left until I go back home. I have changed a lot since I came here. Compared to myself when I was in Japan, I have become much stronger mentally, and my horizon has become wider. Actually, I have never had a problem with my English ability. It’s because I didn’t give up. Even when I didn’t understand English, I asked and I learned. If I made a mistake, I didn’t care. I just kept trying again and again. “You can cry, you can run away, but don’t give up.” I have lived in New Zealand with this phrase in my mind. In New Zealand, nobody laughs at my English, unlike in Japan, so I can have a huge number of conversations with my friends every day. There isn’t a moment when I’m not talking. And my friends correct my English. That’s why my English has improved a lot, especially my pronunciation. I don’t have a strong Japanese accent anymore. I still want to learn English, and I really don’t want to leave my friends and family. I wish I could live in New Zealand forever. I will definitely come back to New Zealand soon. It has been absolutely the best year of my life. Thank you, New Zealand.
こんにちは！私はタウラロアエリアスクールに通っているyear12のまひろです。ニュージーランドに来て９ヶ月が経ちました。ずっと前からニュージーランドに住んでいるような気がしています。自分もkiwiになれたらいいなと思うばかりです。
私のホストファミリーは、ホストファザーのジョン、ホストマザーのタバサ、ホストブラザーのブレイン、ホストシスターのリビーとハーパー、そしてブラジルからの留学生のパオラです。そして、ペットとして、犬のアーチーと猫のフレアウィロー、デブ、フトアゴヒゲトカゲのスキがいます。リビーは今日本に留学中で、パオラはブラジルに帰国してしまったので、もう一緒には住んでいません。2人とも私の大親友なので、とても寂しいです。私たちはとても仲が良く、ホストファミリーは私のことを「日本の娘」と呼んでくれます。私のホストファミリーは最高だって？わかってます。リビーとは何度も口論しました。例えば、リビーがあまりハッピーではない時に、私は彼女にずっと話しかけ続けました。彼女に元気になってもらいたかったから。彼女はただ少し一人になりたくて人と喋る気分ではなかっただけですが、私はそれに気づかず話しかけ続け、彼女をイラつかせてしまいました。このように、リビーと私は人生、将来、私たちの性格など、たくさんのことについて話しました。私は彼女からたくさんのことを学ぶことができました。彼女のおかげで、私は多くの点で良い方向に変わったと確信しています。彼女には本当に感謝しています。私たちは本当の姉妹みたいです。
私は毎日、授業中でさえもとてもよく話します。たくさん質問をし、知らない人とも話します。私はとても社交的な人間なので、日本で少し浮いているように感じていました。だから、出来るだけさりげなく人前で話すようにしていました。日本では多くの人が静かで恥ずかしがり屋です。でも、ニュージーランド人たちは皆とても社交的です。今自分が浮いているとは感じません。むしろ居心地が良く、ここが私の居場所だ！という気がします。男女問わずみんな私にとても親切なので、友達を作るのに苦労はしませんでした。特に私はここの学校の先生が大好きです。先生たちはいつも私のことを気にかけてくれます。私は普段先生が好きではないのですが、ここの先生たちはすぐに大好きになりました。そして、ダンススタジオの人たちもとてもいい人たちです。私はダンススタジオに温かく迎え入れてもらい、たくさんのコンクールに出場し、1位を獲得しました。たくさんの人が私を応援してくれました。
ニュージーランドでの最高の思い出は、スクールボールです。スクールボールの数日前、友達とオークランドで5軒のお店を回ってドレスを選び、当日ボールの直前には一緒に準備をしました。ドレス選んで、みんなで用意してボールに行くというのが私の夢でした。小さい頃からスクールボールの映画をよく見ていたので、スクールボールを体験できて嬉しかったです。本当に楽しかったです。
帰国まであと30日ほどです。ここに来てから私は大きく変わりました。日本にいた頃と比べて、精神的にとても強くなり、そして視野も広がりました。実は英語力で困ったことは一度もありません。なぜなら絶対に諦めなかったからです。英語が分からなかったら、質問して学びました。間違えても気にせず、ただ何度も何度も挑戦し続けました。「泣いてもいい。逃げてもいい。でも諦めるな。」私はこの言葉を心に留めてニュージーランドで暮らしています。ニュージーランドでは、日本のように私の英語を笑う人はいません。だから毎日友達とたくさんの会話をすることができています。話さない瞬間なんてないくらいにずっと英語を喋っています。友達も私の英語を直してくれます。だから私の英語は上達しました。特に発音です。もう日本語のアクセントはありません。もっと英語を学びたいし、友達や家族と離れたくないです。できれば、ニュージーランドに永遠に住みたいです。すぐに必ずまたニュージーランドに戻ってきます。本当に人生で最高の一年でした。ありがとうニュージーランド🇳🇿❤️
