Tēnā koutou katoa (Hello to you all). I’m Masako, and I go to Pompallier Catholic College in Whangārei as a Year 12 student.
Today, I want to talk about my life in New Zealand. It’s been over nine months since I came here, and a lot has happened. I can’t believe that we’ll be back in Japan in about two weeks! I’ve experienced so many things here. If I tried to write about all of them, I could write a whole book. I wish I could talk about everything, but you’d probably get bored, so I’ll share with you just one of my best experiences. But first, let me talk about my life here.
My school life at Pompallier is more exciting than in Japan. We can choose the subjects we want to take, so school isn’t boring—it’s interesting. Oh, wait. I don’t mean that schools in Japan are boring… well, maybe just a little bit. Anyway, let me get back to what I was saying. School here is interesting. I’m taking some subjects that I can’t take in Japan.
My favorite subject is Art. I’ve always liked drawing, so I decided to take this class. I tried oil painting for the first time. It’s different from acrylic or watercolor painting. I don’t know how to express it, but in oil painting the colors are deeper and more vivid. It also takes a few days or even weeks to dry completely, so it’s possible to paint over it many times. However, the smell is very strong and it’s difficult to use. I personally like the smell—I don’t know why, but I just do.
Now, let me talk about what I do in my free time. After school, I do my assignments and read books that I borrow from the library, or I draw something. On weekends, I usually go to town by bus and visit the library to read or study. I also like to walk around and look at the shops.
Finally, I want to talk about one of my favorite experiences here — “the school ball.”
It isn’t the kind of ball that we use when we play basketball or volleyball. It’s a kind of party where students dance and spend time with their friends. I wasn’t planning to go to the ball at first because the tickets were expensive, and I thought it wouldn’t be my kind of place. I’m not the type of teenager who goes to parties and has fun chatting or dancing. Honestly, I know that I’m a pretty bad dancer, and that was another reason I didn’t want to go. However, my friends said that it wasn’t important to dance well — the most important thing was just to have fun. They invited me to the ball, and I decided to go. My host sister lent me a red dress. It was a very beautiful dress — the most beautiful and gorgeous one I had ever seen in my life. In Japan, I had never worn a dress because I thought it was strange, and I didn’t like wearing one. I’m more of a “pants-type” girl. However, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try wearing a dress, so I wore the one I borrowed from my host sister. I also bought my own heels. It was my first time wearing heels, so it felt a bit strange at first, but I liked the feeling of being taller than usual.
In Japan, we don’t have school balls, so I really didn’t know how to act or what to do at the beginning. But over time, it became fun, and I had a great time with my friends. We danced and talked a lot. I even talked to some people I had only known by names or face before, so it was a really good experience.

こんにちは｡ ワンガレイにある Pompallier Catholic Collage にyear12として通っているまさこです｡
今日は私のニュージーランドでの生活について話したいと思います｡もうここに来てから9ヶ月以上が経って､色々なことが起こりました｡あと2週間で日本に戻るなんて信じられません｡ここで色々なことを経験してきたので、全部書こうとしたら本が書けるレベルだと思います。みなさんに私の経験や体験を全部話せたら嬉しいですが、おそらく飽きると思うので、今日は私の最高の経験の一つを話したいと思います。でも、最初に私のここでの生活について話させてください。
私のPompallierでの生活は、日本での生活よりも充実しています｡私達が取りたいと思う授業が取れるので、学校はつまらないと感じることがなく､いつも面白いです｡別に日本の学校がつまらないとかっていう意味ではありません。まあ､ちょっとだけそうですが。話を戻すと､学校が面白く､日本では取れない教科を取っています｡1番好きな教科は美術です｡私は昔から絵を描くのが好きだったので､このクラスを受講しました｡ここで人生で初めて油絵に挑戦しました｡アクリル画や水彩画と違うところがあります｡油絵は、なんと表現したらいいのか分かりませんが、色が深くて鮮やかです｡完全に乾くのに数日から数週間かかるので､何回も描き直すことが可能です｡しかし､匂いが強く､扱うのが難しいです｡私は個人的にこの匂いが好きです。なぜかはわかりませんが。次に、私が自由時間に何をしているのかを話します｡放課後は、課題をやって､図書館から借りた本を読んだり､絵を描いたりしています｡週末はバスで街まで行って､図書館で本読みます。その後はお店を見て回ります｡
最後にここでの1番の経験について話します｡それは”ボール”です｡バスケやバレーをする時に使うボールではなく､学校で行われるパーティーのようなもののことです｡生徒達はダンスしたり､友達と楽しく過ごしたりします｡チケットがちょっと高くて､ボールは私に合わないと思っていたので、最初は行く気がなかったです｡私は、パーティーに行って､おしゃべりやダンスを楽しむ系女子ではないです。そして、正直､私はうまく踊れないもの知っています。それが行く気がなかった理由でもあります｡しかし､友達が上手に踊ることが重要ではなく､楽しむことが1番大切だと言ってくれたので、行くことにしました｡ ホストシスターが赤のドレスを貸してくれました｡ 私の人生の中で見てきた1番綺麗なドレスでした｡ 日本ではなんかちょっと変だと思ってドレスを着ませんし、ドレスのようなものを着るのもあまり好きではありません。どちらかというとズボンを履く系女子です｡ しかし､ドレスを着てみるいい機会だと思ったので、ホスシスターが貸してくれたドレスを着ました｡自分用のヒールも買いました｡ ヒールを履くのが初めてだったので、最初ちょっと変な感じがしましたが､普段より背が高くなる感じが好きでした。日本ではボールはないので、始めはどのように行動すればいいのか分かりませんでしたが､時間が経つにつれて楽しくなってきて、友達といい時間が過ごせました｡ たくさんダンスをして、顔や名前だけしか知らなかった人とも喋れ、とてもいい経験になりました｡
