One Tuesday morning, during homeroom, a funny thing happened. While listening to the teacher, my stomach suddenly growled very loudly. It was much louder than I’d expected and my close friend heard it. We looked at each other and tried our best not to laugh. After homeroom, she kindly asked me if I had eaten breakfast, which made me feel embarrassed, but it was a great icebreaker.
By the way, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Juri, and I’m currently studying as a Year 12 student at Tauraroa Area School. It’s been a while since my last essay was posted. I can’t believe that I have only one month left before returning to Japan. Time flies so fast. To be honest, I don’t want to go back yet because I’m having such a wonderful time with my host family and friends. Today, I’d like to share some of my favorite recent memories with you.
First, let me tell you about my friends. Over the past eight months, I’ve been blessed with many friends. Today, I want to talk about one of them, Evie. We met in that homeroom class. Before meeting her, most of my friends here were older, so she became my very first friend of the same age. We often talk about our families and weekend plans. Showing each other pictures of our siblings and chatting about them has become a truly precious part of our time together. Evie always listens patiently to my imperfect English and helps me out when I struggle to find the right words. Her warmth has saved me so many times. Although I was embarrassed when my stomach growled in class, I never imagined that such a small accident would lead to such a deep, irreplaceable friendship. Now, it’s a funny memory that we both laugh about.
Next, let me tell you about another unforgettable memory. During Term 2, my host mother asked me, “Would you like to teach Japanese at my school?” In my last essay, I wrote about the importance of communication, so I wanted to take on the challenge, though I was nervous about whether I could teach well. The moment I walked into the classroom, everyone welcomed me warmly. Sometimes I felt frustrated because I couldn’t explain things well, but seeing the students listen carefully and try to understand my English made me relax and feel incredibly happy.
On the last day of class, we made origami cranes together. At first, they struggled and said it was too difficult, but as I helped them one by one, they focused intensely and even started helping each other. When they proudly showed me their colorful, finished cranes, I was overjoyed to know that my passion for sharing Japanese culture had truly reached them. When it was time to leave the classroom for the last time, a wonderful surprise was waiting for me. I turned around and saw the blackboard covered with the word “Thank you” written in Japanese, which they had practiced so hard to learn. Seeing that heartwarming sight, I realized that even if our backgrounds, languages, and cultures are different, we can connect from the heart. I was deeply moved, and tears came to my eyes. Saying goodbye was so painful that I kept crying not only in the classroom but also after returning home. At the same time, from the bottom of my heart, I felt glad that I’d worked so hard for them.
It was also the moment I finally understood my mother’s feelings. My mother is a kindergarten teacher. She always talks about the growth of her students as if it were her own, and for the first time, I truly understood why she takes so much pride in her job.
This challenge of studying abroad has given me great confidence and taught me the importance of taking the first step. The warm-hearted people I have met in New Zealand have supported me, and the special experiences I have had have helped me broaden my perspective. I now realize that I have come this far only because there was always someone by my side encouraging me.
Finally, as a Year 12 student, I’d like to leave a message for the first-year students who are about to study in New Zealand. I’m sure you are full of both excitement and anxiety right now. You might feel confused in a new environment or feel down when things don’t go as planned. In those moments, I’d like to share a phrase that has always supported me and become my personal motto. That is, “Even if you get only 3 points on a test, it’s perfect if your smile is 100 points.” Even if you can’t get the results you want, or if you can’t communicate well, you can definitely overcome any obstacle as long as you keep looking forward and keep smiling. It’d be a huge waste to hold yourself back just because you’re afraid of making mistakes. With a perfect smile and confidence, please step out into this wonderful new world during your time in New Zealand. A beautiful view that will become a lifelong treasure is waiting for you. I’ll always be cheering for your new challenge from Japan with all my heart. Have confidence and have a wonderful trip!
With a passion as strong as the New Zealand sun,
Juri
