“Accepting My Imperfect Self”

I’m Yuna.  Today, let me share what I’ve learned here in New Zealand.
Through my 10 months in NZ, I realized that it is important to accept my imperfect self. I tended to think that I had to be perfect in everything and avoid making mistakes before I came to NZ. To be honest, even in New Zealand, I sometimes thought so.

However, while studying abroad, things did not always go the way I wanted, and I failed many times. For example, when I first came to NZ, I could not speak English as well as I wanted to. Moreover, I got stuck many times when I talked to people. I used to blame myself for not being able to speak English well whenever I made mistakes, and I tended to think, “I have to speak English well when I talk to people.” However, many people understood what I said and listened to me until I finished speaking. This occurred more often than I expected. Through this experience, I’ve learned that I do not need to be perfect when talking to people, and that it is more important to express my honest feelings without being afraid of making mistakes.

In addition, I used to think, “I have to be right,” not only when speaking English but also when making my own decisions. As I wrote in my last essay, I changed year levels from Year 11 to Year 12. Just after I changed year levels, it was fun to spend time in Year 12, and I thought I did not regret changing year levels. However, when I saw other exchange students having fun in Year 11, I ended up wondering why I was still struggling, and I started to wonder if I had really made the right decision. Also, I felt that I had to prove that I had made the right decision to change year levels. Therefore, I put pressure on myself.

However, as I thought about my situation, I realized that there is not always a perfect decision. Even if I had stayed in Year 11, I would have regretted something at some point anyway. I have learned that it is important not to dwell on the past, but to stay positive and think about how I can enjoy the rest of my time in New Zealand.

These experiences made me grow as a person. Compared to when I first came to NZ, I have become less of a perfectionist, and I’ve learned to think more positively.

I have also realized that “I do not need to put pressure on myself to achieve something just because I am studying abroad.” Honestly, even when I was brave and tried something, I often failed, and things did not go as planned. I used to feel down whenever I failed. However, gradually, I realized that even if I do not get the results I want, it is important to acknowledge my effort. Looking back, those failures are like a lucky charm for the next time I try something new. Therefore, through these experiences, I’ve learned that accepting myself even when I fail helps me take the next step forward.

While studying abroad, I feel that every time I overcome one challenge, another one comes. I used to think negatively about that. I wondered why I had to go through so many problems. However, overcoming many challenges has made me stronger and helped me grow as a person.

Finally, my 10 months of studying abroad seemed long at first, but looking back, the time went by so quickly, and my life here has been filled with a lot of bright and fun moments. These days when I laugh with my friends, host family, and teachers are coming to an end soon. I was lucky to have such a valuable experience during my teenage years. I am really grateful to my family, my teachers in Japan, my host family, my friends and teachers in New Zealand, and my study abroad agent. This is my first experience abroad, and everything I’ve learned here in New Zealand will always be a precious treasure to me as I go through life.
