Kia ora! How have you been? I’m Kanade. It’s been more than nine months since I came to New Zealand and I’m going back to Japan soon. Time flies surprisingly fast. I can’t imagine leaving this place. In this essay, I’ll talk about what I experienced during my time studying abroad.
When I first arrived here, I couldn’t imagine living here without my family, friends and my own culture. It was really hard for me to adjust to the culture and lifestyle. However, when I started looking at things from a different perspective, it helped me to adjust to and understand life here better. Understanding their culture was one of the reasons why I came here. I tried to enjoy and experience their culture, even through small things. For example, many people in New Zealand walk around barefoot. At first, I thought I wouldn’t do that because my feet would get dirty. But when I tried walking barefoot, I realised that it wasn’t as bad as I had expected. This was such a small thing, but I learned that trying new things can change the way I think. I used to think, “Why are they doing that? It’s not normal to me.” But what is normal? It’s just the way we think. What is normal in our culture may not be normal in other cultures. Through my study abroad experience, I learned to accept differences instead of judging them.
“Feel the fear and do it anyway.” This is what I try to keep in mind during my study abroad. When I try new things, I feel excited, but I also feel nervous and anxious. But I shouldn’t give up. We never know what will happen until we try.
One day, my friend told me that she had been scared to talk to me. I was scared to talk to her too. But now, she is one of my good friends. After she told me that, I realised that if I’m scared to talk to new people and don’t look confident, other people might be scared to talk to me, too. Also, they might think I don’t want to talk to them and I might miss the chance to make new friends. After that, I decided to try to talk to new people first, even when I felt nervous. As I started talking to new people more and showing my true self, we began to joke around and laugh together more often. I realised that I didn’t need to be afraid of making mistakes or worry too much about what others thought of me. I learned that most people wouldn’t laugh at me just because I made mistakes. This experience taught me that making friends starts with taking the first step, even when I feel nervous.
When I first came here, I never thought I could live in another country. I was worried about almost everything. Sometimes I wanted to go home, or I felt like I wasn’t part of the group. But now, I don’t want to leave this place. I met a very lovely host family, made wonderful friends, and met amazing teachers. They made my study abroad experience more memorable and enjoyable. I can’t thank them enough. This experience changed me a lot. I became more interested in other countries, and now I want to study abroad again and learn about other cultures. I never thought meeting new people and experiencing new things could be so much fun. This experience gave me a dream to pursue.
I’m truly grateful to everyone who has supported me during my time in New Zealand. Thank you for everything. It was the best year of my life.
Thank you for reading.
