Kia ora. How have you been? I’m Aiko, and I am in Year 12 at Central Hawke’s Bay College. Two months have passed since I posted my first essay. Term 4 has started, and this is my last term at school. Therefore, I’m starting to feel that I’ll be going back to Japan soon. It is getting warm here, and there are a lot of cherry blossoms in full bloom everywhere now, which is so beautiful. I thought cherry blossoms were popular just in Japan, so I feel not only strange but also like I’m in Japan. In this essay, let me look back on memorable things, and my life here so far.
One of my memorable events is my birthday. When I was in Japan, I always had my birthday during summer vacation. So that was my first time going to school on my birthday. While I was really excited to go and see my friends, I felt a bit anxious about whether it was going to be a good day or not. It was because I hadn’t really told my friends when my birthday was. However, many of my friends actually celebrated my birthday more than I expected, and some of them gave me presents. It made me so happy. Moreover, I was glad to be celebrated by people who I had not really talked to before, so that was a good opportunity to get closer to them. In addition, my host family gave me so many presents such as squishies, lollies, letters, crochet materials, and so on. In particular, I got a green stone called pounamu, which is a traditional stone of the Māori people, and I have been wearing it almost every day at school since then. The pounamu have many types of shapes, and each shape has a different meaning. My stone is called pikorua koru, which is shaped like a twist (pikorua) and a spiral (koru). The twist is a symbol of the bond and connection between people, and the koru represents new beginnings in life or growth. This is my most precious treasure so far.
The next thing that I want to talk about is my life in New Zealand. First, I was able to make some really good friends. I’m in a friend group of Year 13 students now. At first, their conversations were normally about things in Year 13, so it was difficult for me to understand them, and I felt anxious about whether I would be able to get closer to them. Therefore, to get closer to them, when I met them, I tried to keep in mind that I should say their names when greeting them, and I gave them birthday presents. They are my best friends now. We often talk about what happened during our day, what to do after graduation, how to spend time on weekends, and how to study English. We also watch movies together during interval and lunchtime. One of these friends has had a particularly strong influence on me. She already has a specific job she wants to do after graduating from school, and for that job, she used to attend a different school called EIT, where she learned about the job. On the other hand, I have no idea what I want to be in the future. I didn’t even know what university I wanted to go to. So, I respect her a lot, and thanks to her, I have started to think about my future seriously. Second, I am happy to have been welcomed by my host family because they let me experience various things. Whenever they go out, they always invite me. So, I keep in mind that I will go if I don’t have any plans, or if it is a place I’ve never heard of or been to before.
Living abroad with people I didn’t know in a different language has been really challenging for me. I struggled with not only English, but also with cultural differences, perspectives, relationships with people, and so on. These 10 months have definitely been the most eventful and valuable time of my life so far. I still have two weeks left. Therefore, I will keep taking an interest in many things and strive to do as much as I can so that I will have no regrets.
Lastly, I am grateful to all the people who supported me. Through this study abroad experience, I was able to realize that I have been supported by a lot of people and that I should not take it for granted.
Best regards,
Aiko
