Kia ora! My name is Rena, and I am a Year 12 student at Cullinane College in Whanganui. My time here is coming to an end. It used to be cold, but recently, we have been having warm days. The atmosphere reminds me of when I first arrived in New Zealand. As I feel the seasons changing, I have also realized that my study abroad experience is coming to an end, which makes me feel a little sad. Today I would like to share my experiences and talk about my life in New Zealand.
First, I would like to talk about my host family. I am living with my host mother, host father, younger host sister, three cats and one puppy. So there are four people including me and four animals in my host family’s house. My host parents always care about me and create an atmosphere where I feel comfortable sharing my opinions. My host sister loves dinosaurs and other creatures. She has shown me books about New Zealand wildlife several times. She knows so much about animals, and every time I listen to her talk, I can understand how much she loves them. The cats and the puppy are also cute, and they always make me feel relaxed and happy.
During the week of my birthday, my host family took me to a Japanese restaurant called “Momiji” in Whanganui. I was really happy when they asked me questions about Japan and said positive things about Japan, such as its food and culture.
When I first came to this family, I was worried because I felt like I couldn’t fit in. I spent a lot of time wondering what I should do. However, now I am enjoying my life in New Zealand with them, and I feel really lucky to have this family as my host family.
Living in New Zealand and building relationships with people here were completely new experiences for me. When I first got here, making new friends from scratch and communicating in English were very challenging for me. As a result, I felt very busy every day. When I was in Japan, whenever I faced a problem or felt stuck, I could talk to my family, teachers, or friends easily because they were always nearby. However, since I came here, I have not been able to rely on them as easily, so I have had to learn to find my own solutions and move forward on my own. I think it was a very hard environment for me, as I used to struggle with being honest with others and making decisions by myself. Even so, I tried to think about what I could do, little by little, and made a conscious effort every day to keep going, even if my efforts were small. Through this experience, now I can face challenges that I would have given up on before, one step at a time.
To be honest, my study abroad experience was not always enjoyable. In fact, I think there were far more difficult times than happy ones. However, through these experiences, I learned that studying abroad does not have to be fun all the time. I believe that the struggles and emotions I experienced will have a great impact on my future, and that they will become strengths that are unique to me.
When we start something new or take on a challenge in a new environment or position, there are almost always risks and responsibilities. Even if we work hard, there is no guarantee that we will get the results we hope for or that everything will go smoothly. However, I believe that even if the outcome is not what we want, the experiences we have and the efforts we make along the way are still valuable.
During my time studying abroad, I made many mistakes and had many regrets, but I also overcame many difficulties on my own. I am truly grateful that I was able to learn these things through studying abroad while I am still a teenager.
Finally, I have learned and experienced many things during the past ten months. I could not have come this far without my family, teachers and friends who have always supported and encouraged me. I am so thankful to all of them. I want to use what I learned in New Zealand in the future, and I also want to enjoy the time I have left in New Zealand. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me. Please take care and stay healthy.
With all my love from New Zealand,
Rena
kia ora!
