From NZ (Rino)

Kia ora. I am Rino, and I attend Paeroa College as a Year 12 student. I can’t believe that I will go back to Japan in two weeks. Time has passed very quickly. And now, I would like to introduce my life in New Zealand.

First of all, I will introduce my host family. My host family members are my host mother, host father, 2-year-old host sister and 7-month-old host brother. They are really lovely and kind to me. Moreover, the kids are very adorable. My host father is always telling jokes and making everyone laugh. My host mother is very kind and it’s easy to talk to her about all sorts of things. I always talk and hang out with my host sister. There is a big trampoline in the yard, so we usually jump on it. Her words and actions always make us laugh. Thanks to her, there is always laughter in our home. I love to spend time with her, and she gives me so much energy and happiness every day. My host brother has already started crawling. I feel it is amazing to see how much he has grown in such a short time. When he smiles at me, it makes me feel so warm and puts a huge smile on my face. I am really happy that they have been my host family. I am sure that I will miss them.

Secondly, I will talk about my school life at Paeroa College. I feel that the education systems in Japan and NZ are really different. Students choose the classes we want to take, so our timetables are different from each other and the members of each class are different. My favorite class is fitness class. This is because we play some sports such as rugby and netball that I had never tried before. I am happy to see my progress in fitness class lately. Also, I went on two trips for international students. They were my favorite events in my school life. It was so much fun getting closer to the other international students and talking about our home cultures and daily lives.

Thirdly, I’ve had some precious experiences. What I especially remember is volunteering at a childcare center during the holidays. I started it at the suggestion of my host mother. We went to Waihi Beach, went bowling, rock climbing, visited Ninja Valley and so on. I enjoyed riding a scooter and creating things with the kids. I was able to get closer to some friends from my school who also worked there, and it was fun chatting with them. When I was about to finish this activity, some of the children asked me, “Why are you going back to Japan?” It was really cute. During this program, there were some times when I got angry at the children, but it was fun to spend time with the children and staff. Also, I was able to understand how difficult it is to look after children and work with them. I received some badges at an assembly and gift cards from the care house in recognition of my volunteer work. I was very happy and proud of myself.

Finally, I was able to have these invaluable experiences thanks to the support of my host family and teachers in New Zealand, and my family and teachers in Japan. I would like to make the most of the time I have left.
